"In 1889 that an Ayurvedic Padsala was started in Thiruvananthapuram by His Highness Sree  Moolam Thirunal Maharaja.This was the first Ayurvedic Education institution in British India.The Ayurveda Padsala has been upgraded to Ayurveda College."Ayurveda Medical Education was established as per G.O(ms)288/2000/H&FWD Dated :03/11/2000 for the effective management of Ayurveda Medical Education and Colleges in Kerala under the Ministry of Health and Family welfare,Government of Kerala.

The Directorate of Ayurveda Medical Education started functioning in Arogya Bhavan Building with effect from 29/11/2000 as per Government Order No: GO(ms) 310/2000/H&FWD Dated 29/11/2000.Directorate of Ayurveda Medical Education was started with 3 Government Ayurveda Colleges and 2 aided Ayurveda Colleges. Now 12 Self financing colleges also functioning under DAME and each colleges have itsown Hospitals.In Government Ayurveda Colleges we are offering the Speciality clinics to the people. Directorate Ayurveda Medical Education conducting Post Graduate Courses,BAMS and also the Paramedical Courses (Ayurveda Nurse, Ayurveda Pharmasict, Ayurveda Therapist)."
